A Message from Outgoing President, Jeffrey Scott MPS '91 - CHS Recap 2023
|
Dear Hotelies, It has been an honor to serve as your CHS President this past year, and I’m grateful to my fellow Global Board members, regional and committee leaders, and other engaged volunteers for their contributions toward this year's achievements The Global Board’s top priority was to support our 56 chapters and drive engagement at the regional level. Thanks to our chapter leaders, more than 103 events occurred this year. Several chapters were successfully re-energized under the leadership of incoming president Richy Petrina '01 along with RVPs and chapter presidents. In addition to chapter events, the Cornell Hotelie Hall of Fame event enjoyed great success for its second year as part of the Hotelie Super Sunday and Hotelie Weekend in NYC in November. With the support of industry partners, CHS Global organized two additional signature events over the year. We also worked to strengthen CHS further. Susan Boyle ’87 just completed her first year as CHS Executive Director, and her work has proven instrumental in supporting the work of CHS both at the global and regional levels. This included helping us reach a crucial mass on The Lobby, now with over 8,000 users. We also examined the Board structure and nomination process, and we have come up with a proposal that we plan on initiating this year, pending the membership vote at the AGM in April. Under the leadership of John Longstreet ’77, I would also want to thank our directors at large for their contribution to this initiative. The work of our organization, including supporting scholarships and student engagement, to name a few, depends on CHS’s sustained financial health. While we remain reliant on your support via dues payments, we explored other potential sources of revenue in addition to the successful Marketplace Auction. As an outcome, we are working on a CHS partnership model, which we intend to launch later this year. Our support of the School takes many forms. Beyond our essential work around alumni engagement, we launched a new communication campaign to promote Giving Day and contributions to scholarships in general. On this note, we thank those of you who support various scholarships individually and at the chapter level. In addition to four faculty road shows which the School supported in association with chapter events, we assisted the School with faculty immersion trips to Miami and Washington, DC. On the PR front, we initiated sending out press releases tied to selected events (e.g., Hall of Fame, Lodging Outlooks, and others) to give both the School and CHS exposure in the industry. Beyond the tremendous engagement of the Collegiate Chapter, presently under the leadership of Lizzie Barrett '24, we continued to support students. This took many forms including helping to curate the Hotelie Weekend program; via the Phil Miller Hotelie for Life Prize and Phil Miller Legacy Award; and the now traditional last day of classes ice cream truck/stay in touch program. Finally, Mark Woodworth '77, MPS '78, completed his four-year term on the CHS Global Board. On behalf of the Board, I would like to thank Mark for his service and accomplishments during his tenure, including initiating the creation of an Executive Director position for CHS. More details about our activities in 2023 may be referenced in our presentation from the Annual General Meeting and recording in New York City in November 2023. In closing, I wish you a prosperous and healthy New Year, and I look forward to assisting Richy and the Global Board in achieving another successful year in 2024.
